When I sing thesong with children I use it as a “teachable moment” to talk about making goodfood choices. I say, “Boys andgirls, this is a silly song, but I want to tell you the truth about fast foodrestaurants. It’s not good to eatthat food all the time because it’s got a lot of fat, sodium, and chemicals init. What are some good healthyfoods that we can eat all the time?” After they name some foods I say, “Well, I’ve got a great song with lotsof healthy foods called ‘The Banana Dance.’”
Last night amother from Canada called and asked what the point was of singing “PizzaHut.” I explained that it was justa silly song that the kids loved. We cross the midline and use it as a brain break to reduce stress. Her point was that it was verycommercial. It is. That’s the world we live in. I suggested that she talk to herchild’s teacher and ask her not to sing the song.
I’m telling youthis story because as teachers you’ve probably heard similar comments fromparents. It is so easy tocriticize. In fact, you couldprobably find something wrong with every book, every song, every story, everyrhyme…. The bottom line is that ifyou don’t like a song or if a parent complains, you don’t have to sing it. Let it go.
Silly songs aremeant to make children smile. Inthe crazy world we live in sometimes you just have to shut your door and SINGLOUD!
